Group member management

LH Membership manages BuddyPress group membership from a group’s Manage tab, alongside site membership: who has left, who is banned, and adding members directly.

Former Members

A Former Members screen under each group’s Manage tab, for its admins, lists people who left or were removed and are not in the group now, most recent first, with their member type and when they went: “left 3 weeks ago”, “left 2 days ago (automatically)” or “removed 2 days ago by Jane”. Current site members get a Rejoin button, a form post with a nonce, that adds them back.

The same list appears in a Former members box on the wp-admin group edit screen, and as a Former Members table at the end of a group report (LH Buddypress Group Reports). Each member’s profile shows Former teams and groups under the Groups tab, visible only to the member and to site moderators.

Where the history comes from:

  • With LH Audit Trail active, it is read from the audit trail’s group membership history: someone is a former member when their latest join, leave, removal, ban or unban for the group is a leave or removal. This is how removals, who made them and automatic leaves are known. Banned members are left out; they have their own screen.
  • Without it, it is read from the “left the group” activities this plugin posts, so a site needs nothing else. The activity type is left_group, filterable with lh_membership_left_activity_type.

Leave activity

When a member leaves a group, or is removed once BuddyPress has confirmed it, LH Membership posts a “left the group” activity (hidden from the site-wide stream) as a social record and as the source above. Leave activities are never deleted, so they are permanent history. The action text is filterable with lh_membership_left_group_activity_action.

Banned Members

A Banned Members screen under each group’s Manage tab (…/admin/banned-members/), for its admins, lists the group’s banned members with a Remove Ban link.

Add New Members

Site moderators (bp_moderate) get an Add New Members form under a group’s Manage → Members screen, using BuddyPress’s own add-members field and autocomplete. Entries are matched by username, then email address, then by the lh_membership_add_members_user_fallback filter (LH Profile Page adds lookup by phone number). Each is added with groups_join_group(), and a message reports how many were added and how many were not.

History

These features moved here in October 2026 (2.88.0 to 2.90.0) from LH Buddypress Group Activities and Notifications, which has been retired; its group admin notifications and group status fields moved to LH Buddypress Extender. For compatibility the Add New Members form also applies that plugin’s old filter, lh_bp_g_as_and_ns_maybe_add_users_to_group_fallback.
